It is a delicious Healthy Herbal Coffee Substitute. Kim drinks it daily...

Tastes like coffee but has no caffeine
no acidity or bitterness
sweetened with its own built-In fructose
contains all the goodness of dandelions
delicious iced
dissolves instantly in hot or cold water
can be used in any recipe which calls for instant coffee
Blend instant dandelion beverage is the only herbal coffee substitute in the United States that features both the health benefits of dandelion and the rich, full-bodied flavor, smoothness and texture of real coffee. Many say that, because it lacks bitterness and acidity, it actually tastes better than coffee.

A Most Versatile BeverageOne level teaspoon in eight ounces of water makes a delightful dandelion tea. A rounded teaspoon makes a beverage very similar to a full-bodied cup of instant coffee, and a heaping teaspoon to a full tablespoon makes an exquisite espresso-style beverage. It is so versatile that any type of gourmet coffee beverage made from it is virtually indistinguishable from the real thing, and it can be used in any recipe requiring coffee as an ingredient. Dandy Blend tastes great served iced or hot, and dissolves instantly in both hot or cold liquids. This delicious herbal coffee is especially good made with milk or dairy alternatives and your favorite flavorings. Those using it to wean themselves from coffee report that the transition is seamless- no headaches, upset stomachs, jitters or other symptoms of withdrawal.

The ConstituentsDandy Blend is made from the totally water-soluble extracts of three roasted herb roots: dandelion, chicory and sugar beet- and two roasted grains - barley and rye. Nothing other than extracts of the three roasted roots and two roasted grains is in Dandy Blend. It is naturally sweetened by the fructose released from the breakdown of the storage starch inulin when the dandelion and chicory roots are roasted. Because all sweetening comes from substances in the roots, Dandy Blend is a low carbohydrate beverage, with only 1 gram of carbohydrate per cup. All ingredients have been chosen because of the health benefits historically associated with them. Every cup contains 630 mg. of dandelion and chicory extract. In Dandy Blend, you are getting the best of all worlds! Nothing compares with it in flavor, ease of use, and health-promoting effectiveness. Try it, you'll like it.

"Of all the coffee substitutes out there, I like DandyBlend the best. I think it is more effective than the other barley-based beverages because it has that little kick of dandelion." - Joyce Wardwell, author of The Herbal Home Remedy Book "DandyBlend is one of the most delicious ways to take dandelion root. Roasted dandelion roots seem to have an almost indefinite shelf life, and give a wonderful boost." - Dr. Ryan Drum, Owner, Island Herbs, Waldron Island, WA.

"DandyBlend is one of the few coffee substitute blends on the market which actually tastes better than coffee. Not only is it wonderful tasting, but drinking it also provides substantial health-promoting benefits which, of course, coffee doesn't have."- David Winston, Founder of Herbalist and Alchemist, Inc., Washington, NJ.

Fall Song:

Another year gone, leaving everywhere

its rich spiced residues: vines, leaves,

the uneaten fruits crumbling damplyin the shadows,

unmattering backfrom the particular island

of this summer, this NOW, that now is nowhere

except underfoot, molderingin that black subterranean castle

of unobservable mysteries - roots and sealed seeds

and the wanderings of water. Many of you have asked from what text I read in our class. There are many references I draw from, however the main lately book lately has been Care of the Soul by Thomas Moore.

Books, as do Teachers appear when we are ready. Breathe to get beyond any resistance and open yourself up to this free healing with Mandaza, a traditional African Healer.

Circles of Light to you,
Kim     Please read on below.......

Traditional African Healer Coming To FPB
Mandaza Kandemwa, a traditional African healer, will be speaking at First Parish on Wednesday, June 24, at 7pm in the Parish Room. Sponsored by FPB Social Justice Committee, Mandaza’s talk will center on peacemaking; dreams as messages from the ancestors; and the practices of prayer and surrender that will help us become instruments of Spirit in honor of all Living Things. This presentation is free of charge. Tax deductible donations may be made through Tatenda, a project of the International Humanities Center, a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization. Your donations are received with the utmost gratitude, as they are the sole funding for Mandaza’s mission. Tatenda means “we thank you” in Shona, Mandaza’s native tongue.
In Zimbabwe Mandaza was born a Svikiro--a carrier of many earth and water spirits, and a Mhondoro--one who is in constant prayer on behalf of others. He travels internationally as a peace maker, teaching the Ways to become “living prayers,” in service of the One Spirit that exists in all things.

Mandaza will also be offering group and individual healing sessions during his stay on Cape Cod from June 22 to July 1.

June Solstice

Happy Solstice,

A lot is happening at Brewster Yoga & Massage..

As we move into summer, we're signing up KIDS (ages 7-11) for our Wednesday 11am 7 week series starting July 8th - August 26th. Use this energy to seed your desires and intentions.

Please scroll down to the very end of this email. I have pasted an email from one of my dear teachers, Tias Little honoring the life and teachings of Pattabhi Jois'.

May your heart be light and full of compassion.
Love, Kim

Remembering Sri K Pattabhi Jois
From Antwerp, Belgium
We learned the sad news of the death of Pattabhi Jois yesterday and so today we set up a humble alter to him during class today with a large striking photograph of his ebullient face as the centerpiece. There were fresh flowers decorating his image and Surya led a small aarthi, blessing his image by encircling the alter with the offering of a hand held fire while we chanted the "kaurpurgauram" mantra. It is astonishing to remark on the extent that his teachings have proliferated around the world, and here in Europe Ashtanga Vinyasa is popular. Certainly the vinyasa wave that swept through the USA could not have happened without the influence of Pattabhi Jois teaching.

His death falls mid stream in this week's training program and on our syllabus today are the teachings on impermanence. So the timing for our small puja to "guruji" was fitting and we reflected on how potent it is to witness directly the passing of a life. I remember guruji referring to the "birthing and deathing" of all things, and I have always treasured that phrase, for in his broken English he suggested that birth and death are not static but involve ongoing transformation.

I recall having studied with Pattabhi in Mysore for six months on my first trip to India in 1989 (and returned again to study in '95). Surya also studied and practiced in Mysore, prior to the two of us meeting. So we both have the Ashtanga Vinyasa practice as a common source for our teaching and practice. I learned the Primary and Intermediate series with Patabhi Jois in 1989. This was before Sharath, (his grandson who will lead the tradition form this point forward) was assisting in the classroom. There were just 12 of us in the room (Derek and Radha, John Scott, Lino Miele, Dina Kinsburg) and what I recall most was how nimble Pattabhi was given his 75 years at that time (he was born in 1915 and died in 2009, so was 94.) He was like a veritable lion the way he moved about the room-lifting people up and dropping them back, holding people in poses and climbing down to the floor next to or on top of his students. I particularly recall the weight of his girth on my back in baddha konasana! The abundance of core strength he demonstrated, down to the very marrow of his bones, was astonishing.

His passing is indeed a considerable loss to the yoga world, for not only did he have mastery of the yoga asanas and have the shakti to transmit this extremely formidable and rigorous practice to all those who walked into his shala, but he was a master of the language underlying the yogic teachings. He had moved to Mysore to study with T. Krishnamacharya from a small village in rural South India and attended Mysore University studying Sanskrit. From his guru

Krishnamacharya and through his studies he memorized the Sanskrit slokas from the Upanisads and bhakti sutras and Bhagavad Gita. On the occasions when Pattabhi Jois would lecture on the philosophy of yoga, and students would have opportunities to ask him questions, (which he abhorred because his mastery of English was always left wanting), he would quote verses from the ancient sources, reeling off lengthy verses in Sanskrit. He was not only a master of hatha yoga but was a scholar, and a bhaktin ( I remember how before the first class started at 5 AM, he could be heard in the front of the home performing offerings to his household deities). Pattabhi Jois had mastered the yoga teachings by a strict discipline of study and through a yoga sadhana that included in-depth memorization of traditional text-harkening back to the days when yogic teachings were limited to oral transmission. This ability to memorize scripture is now a dying art. With Pattabhi Jois' passing not only do we lose a great hatha yoga master, we lose a solid link in the chain of direct transmission of scripture learned by heart.

Two Hands Together,
Tias

we open in our new location Friday May 1st: Brewster In Bloom Weekend

We are excited to announce that we are moving to our new location at 84 Underpass Road in Brewster on May 1st. I felt that I was standing on the most beautiful place on earth, until the sudden cries of my next patient brought me back to reality. I was really standing on the back deck of the St. Rock Medical building in the middle of Haiti. I was offered a chance to volunteer at the St. Rock Haiti Foundation with nurses from Mass General.

The Haitian people are amazingly happy and have the largest personalities. It was very hard to see these warm hearted people suffer with all kinds of pain, mostly from the lack of nutrition. The nursing staff treated patients for issues like worms, scabies, and many different stomach problems mostly contracted from what they had eaten in desperation. At the clinic I would help record heights, weights, and symptoms, pass out water and food; but most of the time I would play soccer or Frisbee with the energetic children who lived nearby.

One morning a mother came to the clinic complaining that her baby girl just didn’t seem healthy. I held the girl close to me in my arms, but no emotion lit up her tiny face. Her body was burning with fever and she had a rash all over her fragile skin. I began to feed the subdued child formula, and I couldn’t help but stare into her inert eyes which slowly began to gleam as she devoured her largest meal of the week. An hour later I learned she had scabies and that I needed to immediately wash my body with alcohol and bag up my clothes. At this point the reality of the Haitian’s situation hit me hard and I cried thinking about how sick this poor baby was and how she obviously wasn’t consuming enough food.

Life in the city was a lot different than life in the Mountains. Port Au Prince is extremely polluted with trash covering the streets and canals; people live in shacks or underneath sheets next to the road. It was hard to breathe properly because of the lead gas pollution and the burning of trash, since there is no such thing as a disposal. It was surprising to see hundreds of cars on the roads when the people here don’t even have food to eat. As we passed the Palace on the way to the airport it looked completely out of place, it was so transcendent and extensive; however, ironically surrounding it were starving citizens living in homes made out of rags.

In the Mountains was another unexpected building, an extravagant Church. The sight of around 100 women walking up the stairs to Church in dresses of every color imaginary just blew me away. I couldn’t believe these same gorgeous people travel to the stream every day for water and go home every night to a small clay shack on the mountain side. On Saturday we took the day off from our busy week and went to visit the orphanage in the city. It was devastating how many children were in just the first room of this 3 storey building. I reached down to pick up an adorable little boy, but as I held him, not once would he look at me or embrace me. He knew that I was only going to hold him for a few minutes and then never see him again. This child had the emptiness in his eyes of no hope. Nothing. This boy’s precious face just broke my heart as I put him back in his crib where he remained sitting reticently. I could only take so much of the orphanage before I began to cry.

Over all Haiti was a shocking yet humbling experience that I will remember for the rest of my life. Even the simplest things like turning on the faucet or flicking a light switch make me realize how lucky I am to be living in such an exceptional place. I learned a real concept from this trip that will stay with me forever, money doesn’t equal happiness. Not one out of nearly 600 patients we saw in Haiti suffered from depression, but even in my small Cape Cod town I know at least 3 classmates who do. I’m very excited to go back to Haiti in March and see how the friends I made there have changed and grown up. I hope my experience will influence people to help poor countries all over the world, because right now they are desperately in need.

I went to Haiti last March when I was 16 years old. I am planning on returning to “see my children” March 16-23rd of this year. Any financial donation you would like to make would be greatly appreciated. My goal is $1000. Checks can be made out to Katrina Messersmith Haiti Account. I am planning on purchasing much needed medicines for the clinic and I would love to take over soccer balls for the children so they no longer have to play with old bottles.

If you would like to reach Katrina, please call the studio and we'll forward on your message and phone number to her or drop your donation by the studio anytime there are posted classes.

------------------------------------
If you would like to reach Katrina, please call the studio and I'll forward on your message and phone number to her or drop your donation by the studio anytime there are posted classes. As the Zen expression goes, "No snowflake ever lands in the wrong place." This is when real peace and ease can manifest in our life, moment by moment. And so we find joy in simplicity.

It doesn't matter what 'type' of yoga you practice, or whether you are a beginner or veteran yogi. Our intention it to help you find peace and physical & emotional healing that already exists within you. Stillness is a doorway to explore your mind and body and Breath is the link between these.

Please come as you are and simply receive at our neighborhood studio and meet current instructors Karen Corcoran and Kim Hudson. It's a Good Thing.

"The holistic system of yoga was designed so that these emotional breakthroughs can occur safely," says Joan Shivarpita Harrigan, Ph.D., a psychologist and the director of Patanjali Kundalini Yoga Care in Knoxville, Tennessee, which provides guidance to spiritual seekers. "Yoga is not merely an athletic system; it is a spiritual system. The asanas are designed to affect the subtle body for the purpose of spiritual transformation. People enter into the practice of yoga asana for physical fitness or physical health, or even because they've heard it's good for relaxation, but ultimately the purpose of yoga practice is spiritual development."

This development depends on breaking through places in the subtle body that are blocked with unresolved issues and energy. "Anytime you work with the body, you are also working with the mind and the energy system—which is the bridge between body and mind," Harrigan explains. And since that means working with emotions, emotional breakthroughs can be seen as markers of progress on the road to personal and spiritual growth.

Not every spontaneous emotional event is quite so clear-cut, however. Difficult and stressful breakthroughs occur most often when the release involves long-held feelings of sadness, grief, confusion, or another strong emotion that a person has carried unconsciously throughout his or her life.
Yoga sessions focus on helping people recognize their own body’s wisdom and get to the source of emotions that may be causing aches and pains, physical or otherwise.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here Comes the Sun
That most familiar of asana sequences, Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation) is as rich in symbolic and mythic overtones as it is in physical benefits.
In many cultures, light has long been a symbol of consciousness and self-illumination. "The world begins with the coming of light," wrote Jungian analyst Erich Neumann in The Origins and History of Consciousness (Princeton University Press, 1995). "Opposition between light and darkness has informed the spiritual world of all peoples and molded it into shape."
Our primary source of light is, of course, the sun. When we look at our closest star, we may see nothing more than a big yellow ball. But for thousands of years, the Hindus have revered the sun, which they call Surya, as both the physical and spiritual heart of our world and the creator of all life itself.
That's why one of Surya's many other appellations is Savitri (the Vivifier), who, according to the Rig Veda, "begets and feeds mankind in various manners" (III.55.19). Moreover, since everything that exists originates from the sun, as Alain DaniŽlou wrote in The Myths and Gods of India (Inner Traditions, 1991), it "must contain the potentiality of all that is to be known." For the Hindus, the sun is the "eye of the world" (loka chakshus), seeing and uniting all selves in itself, an image of and a pathway to the divine.
One of the means of honoring the sun is through the dynamic asana sequence Surya Namaskar (better known as Sun Salutation). The Sanskrit word namaskar stems from namas, which means "to bow to" or "to adore." (The familiar phrase we use to close our yoga classes, namaste—te means "you"—also comes from this root.) Each Sun Salutation begins and ends with the joined-hands mudra (gesture) touched to the heart. This placement is no accident; only the heart can know the truth.
The ancient yogis taught that each of us replicates the world at large, embodying "rivers, seas, mountains, fields...stars and planets...the sun and moon" (Shiva Samhita, II.1-3). The outer sun, they asserted, is in reality a token of our own "inner sun," which corresponds to our subtle, or spiritual, heart. Here is the seat of consciousness and higher wisdom (jnana) and, in some traditions, the domicile of the embodied self (jivatman).
It might seem strange to us that the yogis place the seat of wisdom in the heart, which we typically associate with our emotions, and not the brain. But in yoga, the brain is actually symbolized by the moon, which reflects the sun's light but generates none of its own. This kind of knowledge is worthwhile for dealing with mundane affairs, and is even necessary to a certain extent for the lower stages of spiritual practice. But in the end, the brain is inherently limited in what it can know and is prone to what Patanjali calls misconception (viparyaya) or false knowledge of the self.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"What we perceive with our eyes and our minds can be very superficial.
What we see from our hearts is real."
